Renaissance Art

Come and discuss Renaissance art in this informal, welcoming, art history course. Talk to other students and develop your understanding and appreciation of this much revered art movement whilst critically analysing artworks. Explore key artworks and artists (including Michelangelo, Botticelli and Raphael) to establish artistic characteristics, as well as identifying themes and influences which affect the appearance of artworks and their creators. Compare and contrast art works, discuss what makes them 'Renaissance' pieces, and consider why they are so well respected today

Course aim

To provide an introduction to appreciating Renaissance art, whilst building skills in critical visual analysis. We will explore what "Renaissance art" means, identify and analyse key artists and works and explore political and cultural influences.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • . Identify 5 key practitioners of Renaissance art
  • Describe the physical characteristics of works of Renaissance art, applying key terminology such as fresco, chiaroscuro, sfumato and suggest how these characteristics both affect visual appeal and reflect the context of their production
  • Discuss influences which inform Renaissance art works' production, including political, cultural and historical contexts as well as artistic influences and personal matters
  • Participate in discussions with other students online, to greater understand works of art and their contexts
  • Assess the impact of Renaissance art, on that of later generations
