What do KNIVES OUT or FARGO have in common? Or Sherlock Holmes movies with BLOW-UP or LE CERCLE ROUGE? THE BIG SLEEP and REAR WINDOW? it is the pursuit of truth and Cinema has its unique ways of examining this. Our course will examine such aspects as soundtrack, lighting, plot etc. in the task filmmakers set themselves to entertain, enthral and challenge our perceptions of the human condition.

Course aim

The course is to consider what it is that has been enduringly attractive about detective movies. We will examine a variety of sleuths, how they and the plots reflect whatever were and are the concerns of their eras and how cinema expresses these.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify a number of film titles best described as detective movies
  • recognize what soundtrack contributes to the genre
  • specify the way crime stories are designed
  • enumerate some of the visual elements which emotionally engage us
  • discern the strengths and weaknesses in crime screenplays and performances
