This course will look at the history and contributions of Africa and African women and men from the continent and in the diaspora from ancient to modern times. As the course is a basic introduction to African history, we will mainly focus on key pre-colonial African civilisations The course will cover the main West African empires and those of East and Southern Africa with a key section on North Africa The contribution of women throughout history is integral to the course and there will also be a special section on African American pioneers, inventors and scientists. The course is based on the research of many well known authors of African heritage as well as European sources, but primarily the work of resercher, teacher and author ,Robin Robin

Course aim
This is a basic African history course aimed at challenging and dispelling, common myths and stereotypes of Africa and Africans. We use a fact based approach with an emphasis on using unknown , but powerful imagery, to consolidate the learning.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners
- Although the course is primarily aimed at beginners, those with some knowledge of black history/African/Caribbean history, should find the course content interesting and engaging.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Appreciate the importance of African history and its relevance today
- Chart the rise and fall of several key African empires
- Understand some of the key factors, that lead to the metamorphosis of insignificant ancient towns into empires with international influence.
- Recognize key female figures of influence from ancient times including several warrior Queens and female Pharaohs
- Recognize the hidden contributions, of women and men of African descent, in the fields of Science, Invention, discovery and technology.
What else do I need to know?
A key part of the course is based on the book 'When we ruled ' by Robin Walker Reading some of this book before or during the course would greatly help but is not essential. However for those intending to take their learning to the next level , the book is highly recommended.
