Family History - New Sources or Old. Series II

To explore Family, Local and House History through a series of case studies. This online course will be presented by experienced Family History Tutor, Jackie Depelle. Each project will cover a range of sources which brought together, combine to bring research into an illustrated narrative account - just the thing to interest family, friends, associated societies and organisations. Will include material from different time periods, online providers, local and national repositories as well as sampling Chancery, Manorial and Naval records and a story of Civilian Internment in WWI. Students will be encouraged to extend the research strategies into their personal projects. Select source guidance will be included in Canvas where Students will be encouraged to publish their own case study to share learning, ideas and motivation. The course will be presented in a lecture style with the opportunity to ask questions and suggest avenues for further research.

Course aim

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List four sources which can be used to take research forwards from 1911
  • Many sources exist prior to 1837 list three of them with examples if possible
  • Report on how using a Research Guide or an Online catalogue progressed personal research
  • Provide details of three printed dedicated publications for Family, House or Local History research
  • Commence a case study to share with friends, family and others with a list of materials and websites
