Drawing and Painting: Controlling Colour

Ref: C3679742

Use colour more effectively. Make small pictures to help you understand and explore the effects of tone and colour using coloured pencils and acrylics or gouache. Enjoy the encouragement of a friendly and supportive group where the intention is to help each student produce increasingly confident and personal work. Sessions will start with an introduction and sometimes a demonstration. Each student then spends the rest of the session working on their own picture. There is help and feedback available from the tutor during the session and a chance to admire what everyone has produced at the end.

Course aim

Use colour more effectively. Practical work to help you understand colour and how it is affected by the properties of different materials.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • Beginners should not give up if the course seems to move too fast for them. Artists are always exploring and never completely understand what they are doing! The other students are always encouraging and supportive.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • demonstrate how to use a simple colour wheel to help with colour mixing
  • identify the component hues that make up a colour
  • mix primary colours and white in variable proportions to achieve a close colour match
  • apply different layers of transparent colours as an alternative to mixing
  • demonstrate awareness of the tonal value as well as the hue of a colour

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

Coloured pencils (set of 10-12 colours) expect to spend £10-15 Acrylic paints: titanium white, Yellow: cadmium yellow pale/lemon yellow/process yellow Blue: cobalt/ultramarine/process cyan Red: crimson/magenta optional black/paynes grey/raw umber Smooth white paper A4 size
