This Day School will present an insight into the development and operation of the workhouses in Grimsby and Louth, and their place in the contemporary social fabric. We shall look at Poor Law development, Houses of Industry, and the eventual establishment of the workhouses in both towns. Under what circumstances could you be admitted and released? What were the benefits of the Workhouse to both the inmates and to wider society? What was the deal - what was expected and received? And how was it all paid for? Why did they eventually close, and what legacy did they leave?
