This online course is a light and easy introduction to plant and soil science. It aims to introduce you to the world under your feet and how soils affect plant growth. We will then go on to look at plants and how they function, equiping the gardener or potential gardener with the knowledge to grow fantastic plants. Some of the topics we will be exploring are; what is soil, soil testing, types of soil, changes you can make to soil to encourage good growth in plants, parts of a plant and their function, reproduction in plants, what plants need from the soil and many more topics. The course is aimed at people with little to intermediate knowledge of plant and soil science and will include many fun activities to keep students active.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce students to the wonders of plant and soil science. A basic knowledge of soils and plants is essential for gardeners and those interested in gardening.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the different soil types and their main characteristics
  • State the importance of soils to plant growth and development
  • Identify the parts of a plant and state their function
  • List the different types of plant and their reproductive cycle
  • Evaluate growing conditions for a range of plants
