Introduction to Icons in Russia

Icons are a significant feature in the Orthodox Church. They are also beautiful works of art, featuring in museums and galleries around the world. In this course we will get acquainted with the history of icons and consider their role in the Christian Orthodox faith. We will look at how icons are traditionally made. We will discuss the role of icons in Russian culture. We will also appreciate the artistic value of icons, looking at particular examples.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to the history, theology and art of the icon, with particular attention to icons in Russia.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learning a few facts from the history of icons as a religious symbol
  • Identifying the role of icons in Russian culture
