Literature: Ovid's Heroides with Kim Shahabudin

Ref: C3533433

In recent years, the literary world has seen a flood of modern fiction retelling the stories of women in ancient myth. However, before Madeline Miller, Natalie Haynes and Pat Barker, there was Ovid, and his Heroides: a set of poems which air the grievances of female mythological figures like Penelope, Dido, Briseis and Medea in letters to their husbands and lovers. In this course we will be reading and discussing these poems (in translation), and considering what they have to say about the way mythological women were figured in the ancient world.

Course aim

To read and discuss Ovid’s Heroides, a set of letters in poetic form purporting to be written from female mythological figures to their lovers and husbands.
