Finding The Beat Within: A Beginners Guide to Latino and African Rhythms

Ref: C3533422

Have you ever wanted to try a spot of drumming? Do you feel the rhythm pulsing through you when you listen to music? Well, this course might be your opportunity to learn a few tricks. Dr Mark Crees - expert on Victorian literature - started drumming on biscuits tins when he was a toddler, and he has not stopped since. While he has spent many years with professional congas in professional bands, drumming is something he enjoys doing on a variety of domestic surfaces, from oven racks, to water cooler bottles and, of course, the good old pots and pans. On this course, he will explore how drumming is closely allied to dance. He will demonstrate a few conga and bongo techniques and encourage you to do the same, using whatever kitchen equipment - or drums - you may have to hand. Everyone has rhythm inside them; there are no rights and wrongs. All you need to do is follow the funk and let your hands do the dancing.

Course aim

To explore some of the basics of rhythm and drumming, both for sheer pleasure and for the expansion of musical horizons.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • to explore off beats and unusual rhymical quirks.
  • identify the basic elements of a Latino or African beat.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

Try and find some resonant surfaces if you can, for there is an element of participation on this course. If you don't posses an actual drum, then find a boomy dustbin, or a shaker, or something that makes a nice noise when you hit it.
