The landscape around Salisbury presents a wide range of natural and human features, making it an ideal place to discover the wealth of information, both modern and historic, to be captured through mapping. For centuries, plans, maps and diagrams have been produced that either describe what is present on the ground, or what is present beneath the surface. These vary from historic maps of our countryside, towns, villages, and cities to specific thematic maps of geology, soils and land use, to surveys derived from aerial information or geophysical surveys of hidden archaeology. This course will focus aspects of local mapping, so that we will learn about the physical growth and development of our city, its suburbs, and outlying areas. Strong emphasis will be placed in how this area has changed over time.
