This study day investigates the developments of 'modern art' and traces the main lines of movements such as cubism, surrealism, expressionism, and looks at the work of major artists such as Picasso, Cezanne, Dali and Pollock.

Course aim

‘Modern Art’ arouses strong feelings - like it or loathe it! This course traces the development of painting and sculpture in the twentieth century.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or knowledge needed.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • explain the main developments in european art of the last two centuries
  • discuss the contexts which led to modern artistic movements
  • describe the achievements of leading artists such as Picasso , Dali, Cezanne and Pollock
