Lorna Doone

Ref: C3532922

Just over 150 years since its publication, Blackmore's Lorna Doone provides us with a novel set in the 17th century at the time of the Monmouth Rebellion. However, this novel offers more than this in that we can also see how the text is shaped by the cultural influences of the century in which it was written.

Course aim

This course will study Blackmore's 'Lorna Doone - A Romance of Exmoor' an historical novel set in late 14th century Devon and Somerset.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of this novel within the context of Victorian fiction.
  • demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the social and historical context of the novel.
  • be conversant with formal aspects of fiction such as narrative structure, point of view, omniscient and unreliable narrator.
  • be confident in class discussion and participation.
  • be confident in the evaluation of primary source material.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

If students have read the whole text in advance of the course that is fine but we will be breaking the novel down in to sections so reading of the whole text in advance is NOT necessary. A reading schedule will be sent out in advance of the course starting.
