This course is fully online accessing the course through Canvas our virtual learning environment and zoom a video conferencing software. You will need reliable internet connection and internet-linked device with camera and microphone. We will email you links to canvas, please accept these to access the course, the sender will show as “instructure”. A five week introduction to the basics of Music Theory starting with Music Philosophy and Acoustics and travelling through more practical topics such as Note Reading, Note Values and simple Composing skills. Each week will begin with the historical background to the theory we are learning followed by fun, interactive exercises to engage the whole group and aid learning in many different ways.
Course aim
This is a course for beginners to Music Theory or for those wanting to refresh the basics of Music Theory. We will use historical learning and Music Theory exercises to help you read, play and notate Music.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners
- No experience necessary ! This course is as valuable for complete beginners as it is for those wanting to refresh the basics of the subject. I will try to set exercises suitable for your own individual experience so that you can progress easily. Basic mathematical skills useful.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Recognise Notes by their name.
- Recognise note values and simple rhythms.
- Understand how our Musical scale is constructed.
- Compose a simple melody of my own on paper or on Musecscore.
What else do I need to know?
You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam and Zoom. You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform. Bring Manuscript paper if possible and optional access to Musecore which you can get for free online
