Art and Literature: The Work of John Berger with Dr Mark Crees

Ref: C3532748

This course will serve as an introduction to one of the most important, thoughtful writers of the modern era. John Berger’s writing took him in so many radical directions: novels, poetry, art criticism, television, motorcycling, stage plays, essays, drawing, philosophy and painting - to name a few. Each of these ventures represented a deeply passionate need to extend the imaginative potential of the act of writing. Above all, Berger hoped that his books would help to change the way we understand our wider culture and ourselves. He wanted art and writing to be more daring, more real, for everyone. As a young man, Berger used to teach for the WEA, so it is especially apt that we explore his work within the context of adult education today. We will give special attention to his two non-fiction books: 'And Our Faces' and 'A Fortunate Man’. We will also be looking at various selected essays and drawings.
