This brief course is a great introduction to developing an awareness of deafness and hearing loss. It aims to give you a background understanding and insight of people who are d/Deaf, or have hearing loss, and their communication needs in a hearing world

Course aim

This course aims to help anyone who wants to effectively improve their communication skills with people who are d/Deaf, or have hearing loss.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise and develop an awareness of deafness, and different types of hearing loss
  • Identify some assistive technology devices, and understand different methods of communication used to help support people who are d/Deaf, or have hearing loss
  • Develop an understanding of Deaf identity, and how cultural background and language affects communication
  • Identify some situations where people who are d/Deaf, or have hearing loss might face communication barriers
  • Use some effective communication tips to help people who are d/Deaf, or have hearing loss
