Going Beyond Political Ideologies with Kevin Walker

Ref: C3532644

Are you disillusioned with politics and most politicians in the UK? Are you unsure of the differences between the major political parties? This taster session will outline the three dominant political ideologies; Liberalism, Conservatism and Socialism and ask what could replace them. You will be invited to take part in an online test, which locates your views politically. We will discuss the value of the test and its results in the session. This will give you an insight into the 'Beyond Ideologies' course starting on Thursday 9th September at 11am.

Course aim

To introduce the concept of ideology with reference to the three classical political ideologies in the UK. Also to provide an overview of the courses 'Beyond Ideologies part 1 & 2' offered in the autumn term.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This is an introductory course and no previous knowledge or experience is expected. You do not even need to like politics.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify some of the differences between the three dominant political ideologies in the UK.
  • Gain an insight into what the word 'ideology' means and how it influences how we think about the world.
  • Discuss the usefulness of the Left / Right continuum in politics and the limitations of and alternatives to conventional party politics.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

The course will be on online using zoom. All course materials will be available in advance using Canvas, the WEA online classroom.
