This six week course will consider a range of writing by the American writer and poet Sylvia Plath. We will look at her novel The Bell Jar and consider a wide range of her poetry and look at extracts from her journals. Learners will need to obtain a copy of The Bell Jar. Copies of the poems to be studied will be provided as will extracts from the journals although, of course, you may wish to obtain your own copies of her poems and journals in order to read more widely but you do not need to do this in order to take part in the course.
Course aim
This course will be a six week study in to the writings of Sylvia Plath.

- understand a range of writing by Sylvia Plath.
- consider her prose writing alongside her poetry.
- understand Plath's poetic techniques.
- consider the enduring appeal of Plath's writing.
- engage in group discussion about this writer and her work.
What else do I need to know?
The course will commence with a consideration The Bell Jar so it would be ideal if learners could have read this prior to the start of the course. After The Bell Jar, alongside extracts from Plath's journals, we will look at some of Plath's poetry, also alongside extracts from her journals.
