History: English Canals with Michael Turner

Ref: C3532632

On this course, you will develop your historical technical skills by finding and exploring a number of sources about the canals. Your tutor will guide you towards sources that provide information on the physical design of your local canal, the industry it was built to serve and the people that worked tirelessly to make a living. The course will look at some of the features of canals, such as Bridges, Tunnels, Aqueducts, Reservoirs, Gauging Docks, Weighing Machines, Gauging Stations and Winding Holes.

Course aim

Discover how the canal system was constructed and developed, to enable you to better understand your local canal.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is ideal for those students who attended the Introductory Course on English Canals, which was held during July 2020 and repeated in March 2021. Other students are still welcome to join.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Appreciate why the canal system was instigated and once established, its contribution to the Industrial Revolution.
  • Show the skills in interpretation, so that when visiting canals in the future it will be so much more enjoyable and informative.
  • Show an appreciation of the benefits of a canal to the local community, following its restoration.
  • Show the skills to research your local canal and in particular how it can be promoted to the wider community.
