The Hidden History of Plymouth with Alison Jones

In this six week course we will explore the more hidden events in the history of Plymouth and delve into the more human impact behind some of the major developments in the growth of Plymouth as both a naval and historic city. We will also discover some of the hidden gems that can be found , sometimes just off the beaten track of the more established historical monuments , which offer an insight and different perspective of the long and varied history of Plymouth . From the Cattedown caves, to why Plymouth stood alone in the Civil War and the impact of being a garrison town had on the people who lived and worked in the 3 towns. The characters and conditions that led to key events will be explored, offering a more human perspective to Plymouth's history as well as discovering a few more hidden gems to highlight Plymouth's long and intriguing history.

Course aim

Do you love the stories behind historical monuments or curious to find out why there is a small cross in a pathway on Plymouth Hoe? Intrigued by the secrets lurking in the history of a place, if the answer is yes this could be the course for you.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • aware of at least 3 more hidden historical "monuments" to be found in Plymouth
  • discuss the affects of being a garrison town had on the people of Plymouth
  • know key facts in the last public execution held on the Hoe
  • understand the human cost suffered by the people of Plymouth during the Blitz of WW2
