Sewing at WHIST

Sewing at WHIST will provide you with basic sewing techniques, safe use of the sewing machine and an understanding of working from a commercial pattern with a view to making simple items of clothing/soft furnishings or altering existing ones. This course will take you through cutting the correct size pattern, laying the pattern onto the fabric, assembling garment pieces together, sewing a garment. The course will also show you how to alter existing garments.

Course aim

The Sewing at WHIST course will take you through cutting the correct size pattern, laying the pattern onto the fabric, assembling garment pieces together, sewing a garment. The course will also show students how to alter existing garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have an understanding of how to follow the instructions on a commercial clothing pattern
  • Lay the pattern onto the fabric correctly
  • Build a knowledge of how to sew or alter a basic garment
  • Put in a zip and make a button hole
  • Use the sewing machine safely

Please bring with you either an item of clothing you wish to alter or a simple pattern with your chosen fabric and matching thread. If you have them ,please bring your tape measure, scissors and pins.
