World War One: Researching Personal Histories

Using all the available online resources at our disposal, you will be choose and research a neighbourhood war memorial that interests you. From the names you have researched, you will pick one that has a lot of existing records attached to him and use those resources to write a referenced biography of that serviceman. The aim of the course is to focus attention on one individual and examine their life story and war record in detail.

Course aim

To research a war memorial and the lives of the individual WW1 servicemen mentioned on it. To produce a written biography of at least one of the servicemen you've researched.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Access and navigate relevant genalogy and Great War websites.
  • Identify and use a variety of online and archive resources.
  • Develop research and analysis skills and look at wider research opportunities.
  • Use the context of the resources to discover more about the background to the Great War.
  • Develop creative writing and digital skills.

You will need to have some experience in family history research or researching military subjects. Most of the work will be carried out online, though you may want to print out any infomation you find to help you pull the story together.
