Autism is a lifelong condition that affects around 1 in 100 people in the UK. It affects how a person communicates, relates to others and makes sense of the world around them. This introductory online session is aimed at anyone who would like to develop an awareness of autism. The session will cover a brief history of how autism has come to be defined and the common difficulties faced by people with autism as well as examining some of the strengths of people with autism. You will also explore how to support someone with an Autism Spectrum disorder and where to find further advice.

- This course is for beginners and improvers
- This course is for residents of the North of Tyne Combined Authority - Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- State at least one Autism Spectrum Disorder or Condition
- Know one fact and one myth about Autism
- Identify 2 common characteristics of Autism and how support can be offered for these.
- Understand at least one possible explanation of Autism and look at the diagnosis process
- Identify 2 sources of where to find further information and support
