As we face the realities of the climate emergency, one of the most important events will be held in Glasgow between 1 and 12 November. During the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021 (also known as CoP 26) the worlds nations either will - or wont - agree how we will take the collective action needed to avoid acute global warming. This online course will provide an introduction to the issues, a forum to develop our thinking as the conference happens and consider its consequences for us as individuals, households, communities and a region. This course is for residents of the North of Tyne Combined Authority - Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland

Course aim

Provide a context to examine and assess CoP 26; having established a shared understanding of the issues and importance of the conference, we will choose some points of focuses and analysis during the event and then discuss its consequences.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for residents of the North of Tyne Combined Authority - Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe some of the causes and consequences of climate change; with an introduction-level understanding of its scientific economic and social basis
  • Understand the CoP 26 meeting; its particular relationship to the Paris accord; its importance and limitations in addressing the climate emergency.
  • Articulate my and other peoples views on the successes, failures and limitations of CoP26
  • Outline some possible actions for myself (individually and with others) and for other public and private agenies
