Painting & Drawing for Beginners and Improvers

We will explore the fundamental skills of drawing and painting while experimenting with different techniques. You will learn how to draw what you see, interpret values, create strong compositions and mix the colour you see using a limited palette. We will follow that up by painting different light effects such as golden hour and overcast light. Oil painters will be taught how to paint solvent-free for our health.

Course aim

We will explore the fundamental skills of drawing and painting while experimenting with different techniques. You will learn how to draw what you see, interpret values, create strong compositions and mix the colour you see using a limited palette.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • use a variety of techniques and skills to evaluate my drawing and make corrections to see if it is accurate.
  • explain what makes a strong composition
  • demonstrate an understanding of values through my artwork
  • understand the differences in light eg: overcast day and golden hour
  • interpret references to compile an interesting composition and painting, changing color, tone, and arrangment as needed.

Paper, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener. Students choose acrylic, oil, or pastel kit. Details will be sent nearer to the start date.
