The Art of the Romanovs

The Art of the Romanovs celebrates the artistic legacy of the Romanov Dynasty (1613-1917). The course will cover the portraits and public monuments to the Romanovs, the stunning architecture of St Petersburg, the priceless art collection found in the Hermitage Museum and those Faberge eggs, as well the royal gifts exchanged between the British royal family and the Romanovs.

Course aim

The Art of the Romanovs focuses on the artistic achievements of the Romanov Dynasty from its inception in 1613 until its demise during the Russian Revolution of 1917.

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the Romanovs from a study of their portraits and monuments
  • Gain an appreciation of the architecture and architects of St Petersburg
  • Understand how the Hermitage art collection was created and expanded
  • Explain the meanings behind the designs of the Faberge eggs
  • Examine the royal gifts exchanged between British royal family and the Romanovs
