In this session, we will study the art of painters like P.S. Krøyer, Anna Ancher and Anders Zorn. After travelling to Paris and London, these painters moved away from the classical art accepted by their art academies, and instead adopted a modern way of painting and modern subject matters. The Impressionists' insistance on light and atmospheric effects was particularly suited to these Nordic artists. For instance, Krøyer and Zorn often painted scenes bathed in the peculiar and wonderful light of long summer evenings.
Course aim
In the 1880s and 1890s, the Impressionist way of painting reached Scandinavia. Plein air painting, bright colours and quick brushstrokes were then used to depict the wonderful light of long summer evenings.
