Sketching in Regent's Park Rose Garden

Meet at the south end of the circular Rose Garden, Queen Mary's Garden in Regent's Park. Always been afraid to draw outside in public? This course will develop confidence in sketching skills on location in Regent's Park. Learn ways to work out, balance in a composition and get ideas about how and where to start when confronted with all those plants and trees in front of you. The tutor will help you with tips to show atmosphere, mood of a place and how to include people in your garden, how to make a tonal contrast, a 3-dimensional sketch, and create rhythm to lead the eye around your drawing working out the proportion and scale of objects. There will be sketching demonstrations, combined with drawing theory, showing ways to use a variety of materials and different styles of drawing from thumb nail sketching to building up a final composition in order to build up layers of colour using a range of mark making techniques using chalk pastels on sugar paper or pastel paper.

Course aim

This sketching session will help you capture the mood and atmosphere of the Rose Garden through quick drawing techniques and blending techniques with chalk pastels.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will learn quick sketching techniques and thumbnail composition sketching
  • How to create a 3 dimensional drawing using a range of tonal contrast to show some atmosphere and mood.
  • How to use a range of marks to differentiate foliage types and create depth in groups of plants and trees in a garden setting.
  • Some quick people sketching techniques for people that inhabit your garden drawing.
  • Improve your well- being through enjoying an art session working with other people and socialising with others interested in art.

What else do I need to know?

You will need to bring your own art materials,a small folding seat or plastic bag to sit on, sketch book A4 or A3 of cartridge paper, pencils HB, 2B , 5B, charcoal and a putty rubber, or a charcoal pencil, artists chalk pastels. Sugar or pastel paper, tissue for cleaning, fixative or hairspray.
