During this day-school we will study women artists who worked in Western Europe (mostly Paris) throughout the 19th century, from Rosa Bonheur and Elizabeth Thompson to Berthe Morisot and Camille Claudel. We will consider how they could train, exhibit and sell their works. We will look at the subject matters they represented and the style in which they did so. We will see how they were considered by their peers and the reviewers, and we will reflect upon the obstacles they had to overcome to become professional artists.
Course aim
