In this Entry Level 3 course you will use common situations like shopping, travel, house and home, DIY and health to develop your ability to solve problems using addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. You will also develop your understanding of fractions and decimals, shapes and their properties and explore different ways of presenting information in charts, tables and diagrams.

Course aim

This course will help you to further develop your skills and confidence in maths. You will be able to practise your maths skills through everyday tasks. This course leads to a City & Guilds Entry 3 Functional Skills Maths qualification.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of two and three digit numbers
  • Identify properties of 2D and 3D shapes including lines of symmetry, length, right angles
  • Read and use common fractions, including 1/3, 1/5, 1/10, and equivalent fractions, to calculate, measure or estimate
  • Read, estimate and use measurement in practical contexts, e.g. measuring a room to paint or weighing food items for a recipe using the right equipment
  • Extract, interpret, organise and present information in tables, diagrams, simple graphs and bar charts

- What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: - You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.). - You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources, record your progress and achievement and to work with others and share ideas.
