Human Evolution

Ref: C2422915

Who are our ancestors? Why did the Neanderthals go extinct? Are you sure this evolution thing isn’t a load of rubbish? This interactive course will discuss the evolution of humans, from apes to hominids to modern and future humans. Students will be introduced to tools and terminology from the field of evolutionary biology, providing a jumping-off point for future evolution and ecology courses.

Course aim

To provide an overview of the science behind past, present, and future human evolution, while introducing students to the basic mechanisms and principles of evolutionary biology.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify and provide examples of extinct relatives of humans, including the innovations associated with each species
  • recognize problems associated with current human features, and their evolutionary origins

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

The course will consist of six interactive lectures, with breaks for questions and activities throughout. Students will have the opportunity to complete post-lecture quizzes in Canvas to assess their learning. Optional readings will be provided in Canvas to accompany lectures.
