Harold Pinter has written many extraordinarily popular plays, including West End successes such as The Homecoming, No Man's Land and Old Times. We shall discuss a selection of his plays in terms of dialogue, character and structure, while also workshopping short extracts.
Course aim
The plays of Harold Pinter will be studied in order to arrive at an understanding as to why he is regarded as one of the finest playwrights of the Twentieth and Twenty-first centuries.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- 1 - demonstrate increased skill and confidence in reading aloud.
- 2 - think theatrically in approaching a text.
- 3 - appreciate the dramatic literature in its context.
- 4 - develop an understanding of basic theatrical techniques.(e.g. rehearsal methods, directing, designing, acting, playwriting etc.)
- 5 - express my thoughts and reactions to a text and discuss these with others.
What else do I need to know?
We shall be studying 2 or 3 plays by Harold Pinter and you will need to get hold of a copy of the scripts under discussion - but any version will be acceptable, and can be from libraries or perhaps found on line. It is fine to wait until after the first session before buying any of the texts.
