Wetland to Industry... and back again

Ref: C2422723

This part of the River Lea has seen many changes over the 10000 years of its human occupation and exploitation. On this gentle circular stroll we will discuss the exploitation of the landscape from Neolithic hunter-gatherers through Roman, Saxon and Medieval times and the industrial revolution to the present day. We will have opportunities to consider the richness of the area's flora and fauna as well as reflecting on current usage and recent attempts to have a less destructive impact upon the environment.

Course aim

This two hour gentle circular stroll through the Walthamstow Wetlands will give us a chance to talk about the area's past, its ecology and its present direction whilst enjoying (hopefully) the summer weather

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the history of the Walthamstow Wetlands area
  • reflect on the exploitation of the landscape over 10000 years
  • offer insights in to the current use and direction of the area

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

As this is a walk in the British Isles we may need to be prepared for both sun and rain. The walk is flat and easy but a sensible pair of shoes and a bottle of water may be useful.
