This course will investigate the origins of Gothic literature in Britain, discovering its relationship with science, philosophy and Romanticism. We shall explore issues of sexuality, gender and the rise of the subconscious.
Course aim
This course will explore the first and second waves of nineteenth century British Gothic literature.

- You will be able to discuss the origins of the Gothic movement.
- You will be able to outline the Gothic movement's relationship with science and philosophy.
- You will be able to outline the attitudes to sexuality and gender in the texts.
- You will be able to discuss the rise of the subconscious and the articulation of societal fears.
- You will be able to chart the legacy of the studied texts.

Pre-reading of the following is advised: Frankenstein - Mary Shelley. Nightmare Abbey - Thomas Love Peacock. Dracula - Bram Stoker. The Picture of Dorian Gray. Selected Poems of Thomas Lovell Beddoes will be available either on Canvas or as photocopies.
