From the folk music of the Appalachian Mountains to the Beatles, from early Mississippi Blues to the Rolling Stones. This is the story of the rise of blues, country music & jazz - and the musicians who made it happen. How music was changed forever, and helped to define the 20th century

Course aim

The aim of this course is to give you an introduction to the origins of popular music, through key recordings & the musicians who made them.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for anyone wishing to extend their musical horizons. Musical knowledge or ability are not required

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand more about the development of popular music, from key recordings.
  • understand the influence of important musicians & their music.
  • recognise the important social changes which gave rise to these musical developments.
  • put some of the music & events of recent years (particularly in the USA) in a slightly broader context
