Women poets from the 15th to 21st Centuries

Ref: C2422585

Almost everyone knows of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Keats, Frost, but women have also been writing powerful and memorable poems for centuries, and their names are often unknown or forgotten. Together we will explore some less well known poems by women (as well as a few favourites) to understand the unique contributions they have made to literature in English. Each week we will delve into the minds and words of women from the 15th Century up to today. Whether you are new to poetry, an enthusiastic poetry lover or a poet, you will be welcome to contribute your thoughts and responses.

Course aim

To introduce and discuss poetry in English by women in each century from 15th through 21st C.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • A love of poetry or a desire to learn why it is such a powerful medium of expression. Whether you are new to poetry or are very familiar with this literary tradition, you are welcome to contribute your ideas. Poets are also welcome!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify and analyse poetry from different centuries
  • link the poetry studied with the times in which they were written
  • discover the wide range of poetry available on poetry sites on the internet
  • appreciate the unique contributions of women poets to this literary form
