We shall discover how Italian literature has evolved in the post-war period and assess its treatment of society, politics and the role of women.

Course aim

This course will explore post-war Italian literature.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will be able to discuss the nature of autobiographical fiction in both Bassani & Ferrante.
  • You will be able to explain the role of corruption in Italy as illustrated in post-war literature.
  • You will be able to describe the relationship between a masculine culture and the position of women.
  • You will be able to relate Italian literature to the wider sphere of post-war European literature.

Recommended pre-reading: The Garden of the Finzi-Continis - Georgia Bassani. The Day of the Owl - Leonardo Sciascia. Days of Abandonment - Elena Ferrante. The Solitude of Prime Numbers - Paolo Giordano The short story The Adventure of a Reader - Italo Calvino will be provided on Canvas.
