We will then experiment with different Sashiko designs and stitches and create a variety of samples. This course requires you to have a stable internet connection and working microphone and webcam.

This class will talk about the history of Sashiko the Japanese embroidery technique and Boro the patches used in the act of visibly mending and where and why it was used. We will then experiment with different Sashiko designs and stitches.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners and improvers
- Please note that this course requires you to have a stable internet connection and working microphone and webcam to participate
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Understand and discuss the concept of Sashiko embroidery and Boro
- Recall and summarise why Sashiko techniques were used through discussion in the class or 1:1 with the tutor
- Identify the tools needed to create Sashiko embroidery and create a list of these
- Experiment with the Sashiko technique by creating a small sample & select a Sashiko design to practice your stitches and evaluate your sample through discussion
- Develop and design another piece of embroidery with more complex patterns of Sashiko and create a final sewn piece with the Sashiko technique. Create boro samplers or use this technique on your own clothes
