This online course will use Zoom video conferencing and WEA's virtual learning platform, Canvas.
Course aim
An introduction to machine sewing for beginners. Learn how to use a sewing machine with confidence for a variety of projects. Understand sewing jargon and basic sewing techniques, types of stitches and how to make clothing alterations.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Prepare for sewing: choosing fabrics, basic tools and understanding sewing terms and jargon.
- Discover how to thread a sewing machine, perform basic cleaning/maintenance and know how to troubleshoot problems.
- Use and demonstrate basic stitches: straight, zigzag, overlock, blind hem, stretch stitch, button hole etc. Adjusting stitch width and length.
- Calculate measurements and cut out patterns, determine seam allowances etc.
- Create a sewing project. (Create a simple item of clothing or craft item).
What else do I need to know?
A sewing machine (although this will not be required During the Zoom meetings) and a basic sewing kit (scissors, pins, chalk or none permanent marker, tape measure).
