Harold Wilson held office at a critical time in the evolution of the Labour Party. The talk will be concerned to assess his contribution to the political and economic developments occurring in the UK during his time.

Course aim

To analyse the career of Harold Wilson against the political and economic background in which he operated

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • to gain an understanding of Wilson's significance as a party leader and PM
  • to appreciate key aspects of Wilson's character and personality
  • to grasp the main social and economic trends associated with Wilson's terms as PM
  • To analyse Wilson's impact on British foreign policy, particularly in regard to relations with the USA
  • to contribute to the debate over how far Wison's pemiership illustrates the notion that the internal party divisions in the UK are more interesting than the divisions between parties
