The course look at the contribution of Ethel Haythornthwaite to countryside preservation as well as taking a look in detail at some of the hills that now bear her name.

Course aim

Ethel Haythorntwaite played an important role in the campaign to designate the Peak District as a National Park. We will look at how 95 high points in the Peak were designated 'Ethels' in her honour.

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • give basic details of the life of Ethel Haythornthwaite
  • offer a summary of her contribution to protecting our countryside.
  • describe the summits and high points now names as 'Ethels'
  • describe in detail two of these 'Ethels'
