A course for students with little or no experience of family history. New sources and methods will be investigated to enable them to begin their research further and work with others on the journey. Particular emphasis is placed on historical context in order to better understand the lives and struggles of the individuals who helped to make us who we are today. Whether you are just starting out or want an opportunity to review your current progress there's something on this table for you. Come and make new friends, make new discoveries and have a lot of fun on the way. This course will offer you the skills and experience to set off on your journey and to equip you for joining in a range of other courses in the future.

Course aim

Designed for students with little or no experience of family history research, the course seeks to introduce sources and methods to enable them to begin their research.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Construct and develop simple flow chart styles of family trees.
  • Confidently apply basic numeracy and literacy skills in locating, interpreting and recording details from historical documents
  • Explore at least three websites to locate information relating to the students’ own family history.
  • Record and interpret details of individuals and family groups into a basic record system.
  • Navigate around the use of Zoom, Canvas and other online tools with some confidence.
