'A Tale of Two Cities', set in the twin worlds of Paris and London at the time of the French Revolution, is one of Charles Dickens' most famous novels. But how far do the depictions in Dickens' story reflect the realities of life during the French Revolution in England and France? How far are the events and characters reflective of the realities of the time? With reference to other accounts of life during the French Revolution; to historical evidence about the events at the time; and to documents and items relating to the period, we will try to see how well Dickens' historical novel actually represents the truth of life in the 'Two Cities' during this period.
