Van Gogh and the Power of Landscape

Ref: C2346959

Van Gogh's paintings express a heartfelt love of nature, of trees and expansive fields, and of captivating skies and horizons. He also loved powerful compositions and robust application of colour. More importantly van Gogh strove to look at the world differently - more piercingly and more intensely. This lecture begins with his early work as an artist where he strove zealously to achieve naturalism and a 'traditional' treatment of the landscape and then we look at the way he began to focus on colour as a way of representing his personal world. He was passionate about what the effects of colour can mean, ways of juxtaposing them and how best to bring colour to life; colour became his main focus and remained so for the rest of his life.
