North East Derbyshire and the Chesterfield area has a array of industrial landscapes formed over centuries based on the resources the area could offer to the British economy and the Industrial Revolution that drove it during the 18th and 19th centuries. We shall explore different industries from woodlands to mining to the lesser known ones such as sickle making. The course will be interactive with students being encouraged to share information, heritage items and handling sessions of the tutors different collections!
Course aim
The shall explore the industrial landscape of NE Derbyshire and Chesterfield each week. Our landscapes we now know have altered through mining, engineering,wartime and community expansion; some have remained whilst others are now firmly of the past.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Describe, giving at least 2 examples, the industrialisation of the area and the different trades and industries.
- Describe the different industries that occurred in the area
- Give at least 2 examples of locations in the area and conduct their own further research or visit
- Identify opportunities to volunteer at a heritage location and learn more about its past.
What else do I need to know?
As the sessions will aim to be interactive it would be useful if students if they have information, memrobellia etc could at some point share items etc with others.
