This course is an introduction to creating portrait paintings. It will cover the basic principles in anatomy and proportion. An approach to painting techniques and colour work, and to create a portrait painting in your chosen media.

Course aim

This course will look at the basic principles of portrait painting. We will look at basic anatomy and proportions, drawing the head and practical work to develop skills in creating a portrait in your chosen media.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • This course is open to all. It would be useful if you have had some drawing and/or painting experience before even if completely new to portrait painting but this is not essential.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use the basic proportions of the human head.
  • Make sketches of the head
  • Use a painting technique/s to explore portrait painting
  • Research and discuss own and artists' work in class
  • Create a portrait painting

You will need a sketch book/ paper. drawing materials pencil/charcoal, rubber, sharpener etc and painting media and surface of your choice (acrylics/oils or watercolour etc)
