If you are a crafter, a would-be crafter, or just someone who has often wondered what Kumihimo braiding is all about (- or maybe you never heard of it until today...), this little introductory course is for you. I will talk about this Japanese art/craft, show you how to make a Kumihimo disk, and talk about where you can get the ready-made articles. I'll talk about other equipment you will need, or that you could use, show you some Kumihimo 'in action', and teach you a couple of basic but effective techniques to make simple braids you can use for gifts/wearables with a Summer flavour.
Course aim
An introduction to Kumihimo braiding with a Summer flavour. You will be introduced to the Japanese art of braid-making and learn a few simple gift/wearable ideas for the Easter/Spring season.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- describe the term Kumihimo and what it refers to
- make a Kumihimo disk and how to use it
- make a simple braid using the Kumihimo disc
- contribute at least one idea for making gifts and wearables using Japanese braiding
- list other equipment that you might want or need to practise the art/craft of Kumihimo
What else do I need to know?
Bring a round kumihimo disk if you have one, or otherwise provide a couple of pieces of cardboard (preferably corrugated, ie from packing boxes, or one piece of stiff card), a pencil, ruler, glue stick or some glue, and a pair of compasses or something to draw round, approximately 4" in diameter.
