Music Appreciation: Beethoven in 11 Pieces with Nicholas Redihough

Students on this course will be able to appreciate the music of Beethoven, starting with eleven significant compositions, one per week, and hopefully broadening out from there to include different pieces by Beethoven. We will listen to and evaluate the compositions which represent the development of Beethoven's musical style through his three main stylistic periods. Students will have the opportunity to present their own recommendations, to engage with the biography of the composer and discuss their responses to the music in its historical context, with a view to including and considering aspects of the social, political and cultural background.

Course aim

To examine and analyse 11 different compositions by Beethoven over the span of his life in order to develop individual listening skills. There will be an emphasis on group discussion, learning activities and the biography of Beethoven's life.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for everyone, from beginners to advanced appreciators of music. Students may be interested in the course text book: 'Beethoven: A Life in Nine Pieces' by Laura Tunbridge (Viking, an imprint of Penguin Books: 2020)

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Assess and appreciate at least 3 key features of Beethoven's music
  • Identify at least 7 different works by Beethoven from his early, middle and late styles
  • Develop my listening skills to describe, with perception and understanding, and giving examples, different elements of Beethoven's music
  • Discuss my responses to music by Beethoven with other participants on the course and explain my reasons
  • Demonstrate an ability to embrace and evaluate Beethoven's music and explain its social, cultural and historical context
