this course will explore topics spanning art history to the art of tomorrow. While some sessions will be pre-planned, others may be a response to topical news items, issues and events that arise in the art world during the course, with scope for student suggestions. Generally - but not exclusively - the focus in each session will be on two artists and a particular work by each of them, Some artists we will look at will be famous, others more obscure, but relevant background material will be provided. Students will be encouraged to debate, draw on their own past experiences and existing knowledge to make connections and form opinions.
Course aim
From the Italian Renaissance to the Harlem Renaissance, this course will provide discussion and debate about on a range of topics concerning art, past, present and future.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Identify how artists - contemporary or from different periods - have dealt with similar themes and give examples
- Describe the works and style of at least one artist new to you
- Describe how artworks, past and present, might be relevant - positively or negatively - to contemporary values and issues such as tolerance, rule of law, democracy
- Describe how artists have trained and functioned in different periods and give examples
