From earliest times the visual arts have been a vital element of Australian culture and identity. Indigenous peoples and settleres used visual images to communicate and understand their place in the world, and express meaning and connection with the land they inhabit. In this course we will look Aboriginal art, images made by early settlers and explorers and the ways in which European artistic traditions filtered through to Australian artists and their responses whcih made Australian artists part of an international avant garde.

Course aim

Antipodean Art has ancient origins, a distinctive history and extensive influence. Explore and learn about the art of Australia in chronological and thematical context.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • I will understand the developments of visual arts in Australia over time.
  • I will be able to identify themes of place and identity in Australian art.
  • I will understand the distinctiveness of Australian art within world art history.
  • I will learn about analysing and interpreting visual works of art.
